Our History

Immigrant Migrant Women’s Association of Halifax (IMWAH) was founded by immigrant and migrant women participating in the Women’s Action Coalition of Nova Scotia (WACNS) and the ISANS Immigrant Women’s Leadership Training. Since 2012, IMWAH has organized several community initiatives to increase public awareness of gender equality issues facing immigrant, migrant women and girls and to promote their contributions to diverse professions in Nova Scotia.

IMWAH’s advocacy is found in and recognized across communities and all levels of government. This includes:

  • Participation on the Local Immigration Partnership (education, economic and social inclusion subcommittees);

  • Diverse Voices for Change (DVC), a Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) three-year initiative inspiring women from diverse communities to engage in local government decision-making;

  • Organizing the Campaign School for Women 2018 hosted by the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women (NSACSW)

  • Receiving its first federal funding from the Department for Women and Gender Equality to build organizational capacity and advance our mission (2019-2023).
